Although Onrushing Cloud is the first recording by this trio, Andrea Belfi (drums, percussion, electronics), David Grubbs (electric guitar, voice, piano) and Stefano Pilia (electric guitar) share a common bond in that they’ve all released solo works via the Swedish label, Hapna. On this album Grubbs and Pilia combine instrumental forces while Belfi sets out a backdrop of highly sensitive percussion and electronics. The outcome is a single, half-hour, flowing body of work that’s indexed into five distinct tracks. After minimal beginnings that string together loose guitar pitches and light, jostling percussive noises, the album settles into a kind of slowed down, soft-focus post-rock sound during the latter stages of ‘Hermitage’, leading into an absorbing and distinctly more abstract electronic section during the Belfi-dominated ‘Nitrate Out’, featuring all manner of subtle electroacoustic trickery and clever rhythmic manipulations. You might find yourself reminded of The Necks’ brand of avant-jazz during album centrepiece, ‘City Rats On Mountain Pass’, only for Grubbs to dramatically switch the tone by firing up his larynx for the excellent esoteric rock droner ‘Onrushing Cloud’. After all this, the album draws itself to a close with the trio channelling their energies into ten minute finale ‘Lightning Vault’, forming awkwardly beautiful shapes by throwing together fuzz-strangulated guitar drones, martial drum patterns and delicate, fractured electronics. Recommended. (Boomkat)
