In September 2011, Erstwhile producer Jon Abbey was invited to curate two weeks of shows at John Zorn's legendary Manhattan venue The Stone, which he used as an opportunity to invite many of his favorite musicians from Japan, Europe and the US to perform. A second three night festival at Issue Project Room was later appended onto the end, making the AMPLIFY 2011: stones festival a 35 set, 17 night extravaganza in all. Four of those thirty-five sets will now be available in the ErstLive se…
Marc and Olivier Namblard did some recordings of deer during the rutting season. Deer bellow and listen. Marc and Olivier work also with the idea of sound trap. They find a place where animals go through, they set up the recording equipment and come back the day after. Beautifull and amazing recordings. Comes with photos from David Hackel et Marc Namblard. Texts in French and English.
* Edition of 200 * Convergence was formed in 1976 (and disbanded around 1980), with written music for the ensemble scarce, improvisational sessions became more frequent. Their first few concerts at The Music Gallery had a somewhat haphazard and random mix of students, some of whom didn’t quite get the notion of free improv. Recorded live at the Music Gallery in September 1979, their instrumentation includes trumpet, trombone, piano, percussion, home-made instruments and toy instruments, which p…
Bo' Weavil is totally psyched to have the opportunity to release the second album by Reines d'Angleterre. This time a thoroughly studio affair. Reines d'Angleterre is a fascinating collaboration between avant outsider musician Ghédalia Tazartès and two electronic botanists, èlg and Jo aka Opéra Mort. This LP covers more of the wild ground the band started with on 'Les Comores' released back in 2010, but going further into a musical terrain that defies definite descriptiona slow trip into wizards…
he zeitkratzer project Neue Volksmusik (new folk music) is more of a reflex to, rather than a reflection on folk music. This is because the ensemble does not play specific music with any sense of distance. On the contrary, zeitkratzer is taking possession of folk music in its essence. This means that they continue a tradition which folk musics all have in common: constant transformation. No form of authentic folk music can ever be about conservation as a fixed medium, destined for a museu…
Like the strong scent of copal brings ancient memories and visions, each track here depicts a scenery and involves the listener directly, totally. Introduced by the obscure night of "Notturno", like in a wood, crowded with spirits and animals, you're guided through 9 gates, each one opening on a different space and time. As if the purpose was to awake the slumbering ancestral memory of man, this record is fundamentally based on the dualism of elements strictly relating to the human being: "voic…

Black Humor was an experimental rock band from San Francisco in the early 80's. (Not to be confused with "blackhumor," alias of noise artist Frazer Hall.) They released just one, very hard to find LP on Fowl Records in 1982. Only 1,000 records were pressed, each with unique handmade covers: thick slabs of paint, collage, parrot feathers, dirt, whatever else happened to be laying around their Tenderloin flat. Many of these have since gone for high, collector prices or ended up in oblivion.…

With tracks featuring Pambin Thullal, Syeta Choir, and Yumi Nara. Hot Releases.Label: 'Ghédalia Tazartes combines an orchestra and a pop group in one person. his voice shifts constantly from child to woman. completely unique, his music is unbelievable. 7' vinyl. Edition of 100 copies. Transparent vinyl. B/w cover. Released in June 2012. Dave Phillips, based in Zürich and steady collaborator of the Schimpfluch Gruppe, is working with the extreme. This fine piece of vinyl, his first for Joachim Nordwall's iDEAL Recordings label, is a great, odd, harsh and beautiful experience. Humanimalism, psycho-acoustics, voice and body sounds. Honest stuff. And in your face. This is the first in a series of ten 7's by Dave Phillips on iDEAL. 'it's when…
The size of the stage, position of the equipment, monitor position and height, hall architecture and acoustics, capacity and attendance, temperature and humidity, and sound level (dB) or Leq Meter limiting all varied from event to event. Each of the final recordings documents the performed audio output, each hall's acoustics, the audience's reaction, and their proximity to the recorder, all from an onstage position, while retaining the auditorium's spatial impression. Recordings failed, or…
A new series of vinyl-only releases, "from the archives." Islands In-Between was originally released on cassette in 1983. Indonesians often use the name Nusantara, meaning "the islands in-between," when referring to the archipelago that forms their Republic. This LP covers only some of the cultural activity on Java and Bali, the best-known islands out of the 13,700 counted by statisticians, so it is not intended to be in any way definitive. The selections are more like musical postcards of …
Double vinyl version limited to 500 copies. Son Of A Bitches Brew is a true electric jazz record from the Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso UFO. Rooted in the sound of Miles Davis' electric era this record melds jazz, funk and psych with AMT's synth swoops, space whispers and cosmic acid vibe. Tsuyama Atsushi replaces Wayne Shorter on soprano saxophone. Cotton Casino rejoins & AMT goes all in. The only joke here are the titles. Recorded at the Acid Mothers Temple between December 2011 th…
The Preservation label presents Body Moving Slowly, the second full-length album from California's Mirror To Mirror. Mirror To Mirror is Los Angeles resident Alex Twomey, who has quietly developed a raft of stunning pieces across several low-key works on his own Jugular Forest label, many approaching a ballad-like form in their beauty. His collaboration with Matthew Sullivan (Earn), 1958-2009, became one of the more highly talked-about projects of the past two years, one outing named as NPR's "B…
Forms represents Pausal's sophomore production for Barge Recordings and sees the British duo merging their finely detailed sound design and ambience with a newly heightened sense of space and structure. Simon Bainton and Alex Smalley have clearly developed their compositional abilities since their earlier output; the ten pieces here are presented as four long tracks and feel natural in their melding of experimentation and harmonic progression. The rich, sprawling waves of aural grandeur a…
Originally released on the Iskra label in 1975, Improvisation Sep. 1975 is a mind-bending slice of drone improv from two of Japan's post-war heavyweights; former John Cage student, Juilliard graduate, and Yoko Ono's former husband, Toshi Ichiyanagi, Takehisa Kosugi, considered by many to be the father of what some called "Japanese Krautrock," and Stockhausen percussionist Michael Ranta. Heavy layers of reverbed ring modulators, threaded vocals, melodicas, pianos, violins, gongs and Japanese biwa…
Long deleted, few copies available for this 1977 album with Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza members and associates "This is another fine date in Mario Schiano's deeply slung bag of atonal tricks. This date, an improv suite with various attachments, features our fearless Italian leader coming to arms with a quartet whose members carry with them not only most of the instruments in the orchestra, but an arsenal of noisemakers and percussion instruments and an endless round of techniques …
Legendary Pink Dots frontman Ka-Spel has always been a grand storyteller, his narratives pitting the deeply personal against the all-encompassing. In Ka-Spel's world, even the brush of a butterfly's wing holds enormous consequence; the end of a relationship is a full-blown apocalypse! Look past the fairytale imagery, and you'll find that present-day anxieties loom large over these twinkling music-box reveries and dangerously disoriented electronics. Here, the demons of the mind meet a univ…
Subtitled A Sound Journey with Evelyn Glennie, German director Thomas Riedelsheimer's exquisite Touch the Sound is nominally a portrait of the Scottish musician known as the first full-time solo percussionist. Glennie is certainly a fascinating subject. Profoundly deaf since childhood, she disdains the use of hearing aids and sign language, relying instead on lip reading and, more crucially, on the use of all of her senses, especially touch, to hear with her entire body. The film reveals …
