Informed by a particular interest in the built environment, Will Montgomery's 'Heygate' is made from sounds sourced in and around the desolate and soon-to-be demolished Heygate estate in the Elephant & Castle area of South London in 2010. Using processed field recordings and material gathered with contact mics, a VLF receiver and telephone pick-up coil, the composition encrypts the estate's acoustic characteristics in a slow-moving 19' 33" piece with microscopic attention to abrasive texture, low-end rumbles and jarring juxtapositions woven with a subtle but keen narrative which importantly retains the listeners interest. Robert Curgenven occupies the B-side with a more layered piece entitled 'Looking For Narratives On A Small Island' utilising material from his 'Transparence' dubplate on Recorded Fields, together with guitar feedback, binaural microphones, industrial fans and unprocessed field recordings from remote Australia, Germany and Japan in 2009. His sounds are more plangent, spacious, ripe with a sense-teasing tangibility and conducted with a quiet stillness which absorbs us deep into the mix. Gorgeous music and package - highly recommended,
