Asmus Tietchens has called his work "absolute music": sound with no story attached, built from tape loops, synthesizers and, later, minute transformations of recorded objects and water. Born in Hamburg in 1947, he began experimenting with tape in 1965, and his first albums for Sky Records around 1980, produced by Peter Baumann of Tangerine Dream, were still oddly tuneful electronic miniatures. From Formen letzter Hausmusik (1984), released on Nurse With Wound's United Dairies label, he moved into abstract sound collage and never came back.
