Joe Jones

Joe Jones (1934 New York City - 1993 Wiesbaden) was an avant-garde musician associated with Fluxus especially known for his creation of rhythmic music machines. Jones first started experimenting with mechanical instruments in 1962, creating objects like musical boats, solar music umbrellas and a pedaled vehicle that pulled handmade instruments on wheels. Beginning in 1963 Jones participated in the Fluxus art movement, taking part in a number of Fluxus performance art activities with his automaton-like music machines - made from found ready-made instruments

In Performance
Lucky restock! After studying with composers John Cage and Earle Brown, Joe Jones became a prominent figure in Fluxus, contributing to the movement’s first “yearbox” alongside La Monte Young, György Ligeti and Nam June Paik. Beginning in late 1961, Jones began constructing his own music machines – drawing inspiration from the calliopes, automata and orchestrions of the 19th and early 20th century to create self-playing ensembles of stringed instruments, percussion and woodwinds – “played” throug…
A Garden Party
** in restock now, will ship on Tuesday** This entrancing 1983 recording by the legendary Fluxus artist Joe Jones is a must-have for anyone who picked up last year's vinyl reissue of the seminal 'Solar Music At Sierksdorf' once again showcasing a gauzy and cloudy shimmering wash of faux-gamelan, hums and whirrs, tribal percussion and homemade ethnodelic fantasies. On 26 June 1983, Joe Jones set up a solar orchestra in Erik Andersch's garden in Düsseldorf, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Guests w…

Back and Forth Exhibition Sound
The third Joe Jones archival CD release on this label. A single 31-minute recording of said exhibition, August 31st, 1985. Jones' mechano-constructs whirring/clanking all the while, generally refusing to sit still. Back cover shots display several motor-agitated automatons with single beaters attached to end(s), pre flail. Heard: motorik-accent hand drum, metallic ping, bells, possibly glockenspiel (?), distant melodic informations, presumably of aleatoric/wind-based selection. Joe Jones' music …
Fluxus Ain\'t Dead
Gray-area bootleg issue, with paste-on xerox sleeve. No details on the source or date (or anything). But another essential document of the Fluxus-associated mechanical music machines of Joe Jones. If you're interested in Orchestral Sound Art, no wall will stand in the way of acquisition... The music machines of legendary Fluxus artist Joe Jones are a paradox of prepared sounds voicing astoundingly human bursts of free-flight sonic caterwaul. Why is it that a roomful of musicians can't muster the…
