In 2019, or just a little while before, with plans to release Andrzej Karałow's first duo album with analogue and modular synthesiser player Jerzy Przezdziecki's, we not only made plans for further collaboration, but also talked about our inspirations. It turned out that I had not caught such an understanding with any other artists for a long time, and although for Przeździecki the inspiration was early industrial and for pianist Karałow minimal music and the sonoristic tradition of classical mu…

Mondoriviera is the moniker of Ravenna-based musician and visual artist Lorenzo Camera. Producing music at the crossroad between late-night z-series horror movie soundtracks, 2d modular synthesis digital soundscapes and new-school plunderphonics, after his debut “Il Tempio degli Uomini Granchio” on New Weird Italian label Riforma, and the folk-vaporwave soundtrack for videogame Nott Longa on Artetetra, Mondoriviera is back with 10 new tracks jumping from the golden era of glossy horror VHS to ne…
looongplay was born in 2022 during a Shape+ and Nextones artistic residency in Valdossola, Italy, centered around Babau's nomination as Shape+ artists 2022/23. Initially conceived as a tutorial and tongue-in-cheek artistic text conceived by Babau, looongplay was built with a playful approach to music theory exploring the research on audio, listening and improvisation of scholars and musicians such as Pauline Oliveros, Micah Silver, Jace Clayton and Jem Finer. These speculations were combined wit…
*100 copies limited edition* The opposite of closure is opening. The album Closures fractionally links back to Konspekt by mapping the condition of perception and feeling after the closure (of a certain) phase of life. Even though we’re talking about a concrete phase – the most painful loss so far – the pieces don’t revolve around it at all. What is taking place in the pieces is everything after June 2023.
– “a lively joy (from life)”– “perceiving the environment”– “the world is a beautiful plac…
The archetypal Martin Rev sound – a perennial influence on generations of musicians – is most prominently in evidence in the works of Suicide, the duo he played in across the decades with with Alan Vega. However, the radical and distinctive nature of his music can be traced further back in time, originating in the base energy of rock’n’roll which the teenage Rev experienced as the ubiquitous soundtrack to his home city of New York.
2023 Repress. Released in 1976, Eternity was Alice Coltrane's first album for Warner Bros. after eight wondrous records on Impulse! Combining the drones and textures of India, the gospel and R&B of her Detroit youth and the dissonance of modern classical composition, Coltrane's music in the '70s would become increasingly difficult to categorize. Having moved a few years earlier to California (where she founded the Vedantic Center, an Ashram for spiritual studies), Coltrane stretches out on Etern…
After two years of digging, hunting, unearthing archives, digitising and a lot of correspondence, Nyahh Records is very excited to finally be announcing the release of ‘Under the Island: A Compilation of Experimental Music in Ireland 1960 – 1994’. Ireland, a country known mostly in the pop music arena for U2, Thin Lizzy, Stiff Little Fingers et al and of course, the Show Band era of the 60s’ to the present, the country is not known for producing a lot of ‘cutting edge, Avant Garde music. A few v…
Tip! "What’s the Deal? The Dodge Jones Rage power trio was started in late 2021 as a distributed pandemic-driven experimental-noise-audio collaboration by three long-time grizzled sonic veterans. After sharing some initial recordings with each other, suddenly things started moving quickly, and it was clear that this was destined to be, as they say, A Thing.
Thus far there have been releases from Absurd Exposition, Charnel Music, Phage Tapes, Pressortape, and !Mondo Anthem!. All releases are and …
Lech Jankowski’s score for Institute Bejamenta is a medley of cool jazz and mitteleuropean chamber music, that is the best accompaniment to the sumptuous imagery. For all of its optical delights and bantam details, Institute Benjamenta is a remarkable artwork from a singular directing duo and remains an underappreciated classic and a groundbreaking artifact of 1990s indie cinema.
Nairobi-born Berlin-based sound artist Joseph Kamaru, aka KMRU, shares his new work Stupor on the new Helsinki-based label Other Power. Commissioned by the Helsinki curatorial and commissioning agency Publics, Stupor is comprised of three original long form tracks. The tracks on the album are speculative notes to social architectures and environments the artist has traversed.“A musical alchemist, KMRU places his listeners’ ear into a sonic-spatial matrix in which he transmutes his trans-local ex…
Islaja presents her new album ”Angel Tape”, the first release on the new Helsinki-based label Other Power. Drawing inspiration from childhood epiphanies while listening to an alleged recording of angels singing, Islaja has crafted an album that stands out as a major work in her expansive and celebrated catalogue, which includes previous releases on labels such as Ecstatic Peace!, Fonal and Svart. Islaja, aka Finnish artist Merja Kokkonen, describes her new album as a “counterwork” to her most re…
From our now-venerable, but ever thistle-sharp, Scots singer of new songs and old, comes a fifth full-length collection of traditional songs. Reaching down the centuries to unpack these numbers anew, Alasdair finds a set of eternal melodies – and with them, an unsettling number of surreal images that parallel the madness of our modern times.
Jesper Nordberg Trio is a group based in Copenhagen (DK) and Malmö (SE), featuring the double bass player Jesper Nordberg, violinist Stefan Pöntinen and trumpetist Ruhi Erdogan. With Nordberg's compositions as a starting point, the trio's playing can be characterized by close interplay, radical shifts, and having elements ranging from experimental improvisation, Balkan music, Scandinavian folklore, jazz and expressionism. Jesper Nordberg's warm tone and rhythmic displacements meet Ruhi's trumpet…
Introducing Tomo Jacobson's new cross-genre ensemble Sounding Society. Sounding Society's debut album "Homecoming Medley Or Society Into Sound" is a continuous 40-minute-long brewing-together of grooves, New Age, free jazz, world music influences, drones, and electronica in one, generously spacious cauldron over a retro-futuristic bonfire. The band consists of long-time collaborators, members of the duo Wood Oorganization, Tomo Jacobson (Warmbladder, Sun Araw, Mat Maneri) & Szymon Pimpon (Pimpon…
*2023 stock* Spirit Spirit is an improvised suite in nine parts and epilogue by the Scandinavian trio featuring the renowned saxophone player Torben Snekkestad, pianist Søren Kjærgaard, and double bass player Tomo Jacobson. The suite was carefully composed from almost 3 hours of spontaneously improvised studio recordings by the trio. The outcome is a focused, minimal, dark, dynamic, enigmatic 38 minutes of music that unfolds like a ghostly tale. The trio was formed in 2016.
*2023 stock* Lo and behold, the second and final part of the diptych from the unusual free improvising quartet featuring two New York-based viola players Mat Maneri & Tanya Kalmanovitch, and Copenhageners Tomo Jacobson on double bass & Kresten Osgood on drums, is finally here! This time, we enter into a darker, fiercer, seemingly telepathic exchange - a powerful finale to an unprecedented musical journey.
Perhaps for the first time in the history of music, here is two violas, double bass, and drums quartet featuring the New York-based Mat Maneri & Tanya Kalmanovitch, and Copenhageners Tomo Jacobson & Kresten Osgood. Calling their music chamber free improv gives some clues about the sound world you are entering, but it also falls very short in the face of the multitudes presented here. ‘Variations On No Particular Theme’ is a pregnant name in which we can look for the key to this album. Of course,…
*2023 stock. 50 copies limited edition* After his oneiric, Casio-centric 'Nullpluss' that Kristian Tangvik released two years ago, the time has come for his next move. In Kristian's own words: "The Cod and the Cat has developed over the course of two years. It came to me in a dream. Some compositions arrived while traveling, others in a complete standstill. And so I have gathered a fresh combination of exceptional performers from the rich and exciting underground of Copenhagen's music scene, and…
