Reading Robert Briatte's biography of Paul Bowles, I discovered that his poems, unlike his novels and stories, had not been translated into German. I set to work, got his adress from Pociao, sent Paul Bowles my draft translations, and was invited by him in Tangier, Morocco, in the fall of 1993. In the years that followed, I visited him two or three times a year, not only working on the translation of his poems in exchange with him, but also doing a long interview with him about Gertrude Stein and preparing the edition of his theatre play "The Garden". To this day I think back on these encounters with deep gratitude. Here's some correspondence, postcards and assorted other ephemera.
