1990 release ** "“To awaken the ear well” was one of the goals of Luigi Nono in his last creative period, the 1980s and 20th century. Between pianissimo and complete silence, the listener is invited to unexpected sound adventures. Tense intensity with a sparse expression goes together with the breaking of clear coherence in a very concentrated and targeted manner.
As one of his first works, the Variazioni from 1950 derives its substance from Arnold Schönberg, his posthumous father-in-law. The use of the canon and the elegant way in which the work is written for a sophisticated ensemble, combined with a welcome dose of emotion, ensures that the piece does not get bogged down in abstraction.
In No hay caminos, hay que caminar…. from 1987 with again evidence of micro dynamics, even the loudest parts seem muffled in the context of a pervasive silence. “Traveler, there is no path, but still you must travel” could be a somewhat approximate translation of the title. A way to consistently live your own inner life, even if it is on the edge of an abyss. And above all, don't turn around.
The microtonal layers that we find in A Carlo Scarpa (1984) are reminiscent of Giacinto Scelsi in sound, but not in spirit."
