The blurb from the label doesn't seem very keen on branding Black Flowers as a 'supergroup', but that's exactly what they are. Glaswegian singer/songwriter Alasdair Roberts joins Mick Flower (of Vibracathedral Orchestra and Flower-Corasno Duo), drummer extraordinaire Alex Neilson and his partner in Directing Hand Lavinia Blackwall who takes lead vocals. It's pretty rare to encounter a British folk record that packs so much of a punch. There's a real sense of power behind songs like opener 'Calvary Cross', which effortlessly switches from being a crunching, implicitly bluesy slow jam to a weird reimagining of Crazy Horse gone krautrock. All the assembled musicans pull their weight, and impressively they all seem equally comfortable playing through the more conventionally song-like tracks, such as the delightful 'Sweet Rivers Of Redeeming Love', as they do romping through noisy outings like 'Hot Crosses', or drifting their way though the organic drone missive '...And The Words Fell Like Malting Blossom'. Highly recommended.
