*In process of stocking* First of a trilogy of films directed by Luigi Magni dedicated to the papal Rome of the Risorgimento period, Nell'anno del Signore (In the Year of the Lord) depicts a Rome subjected and accustomed to the temporal power of the church.
After this feature film will follow: In the Name of the Pope King (1977) and In the Name of the Sovereign People (1990), which will have the same stylistic line. In the first two feature films, the scores were written by Armando Trovajoli, while for the last film that closed the trilogy, the soundtrack (with a bit of a surprise) was entrusted to Nicola Piovani. While listening to this musical work we perceive a hidden feeling where sadness and a sense of denunciation make us reflect and suffer. The people are definitely brought to despair because of the unjust laws and abuses that are inflicted on them, they will be forced to violate the law. So much injustice and suffering is the result of a socio-religious body that instead of comforting and protecting, condemns in the same way as a tyrant. Armando Trovajoli managed to discover the hidden pain. Even the main leitmotif, in spite of its pressing, sudden, regal and sometimes jolly rhythm, hides a decidedly melancholic feeling. The only moment in which a glimmer of hope is perceived is in the songs "Sapessi quanto amore", "Tema di Giuditta", after which we are faced with musical themes such as: "Coro della morte", which reminds us of the deep pain, the anguish.
The choruses together with the sad whistle in the song "Piazza del Popolo" moves and disturbs us at the same time. An important ost, which confirms how much Maestro Armando Trovajoli's music expands, touching numerous musical genres such as court music, royal music, but also popular music and folk songs. The pieces together with the film (through the false line of comedy) want to shed light (denounce!) on the less edifying aspects of papal power in the nineteenth century, thus drawing a bitter parable on power, ready to crush everything and everyone. A film work that fortunately we will not forget, where actors such as Ugo Tognazzi, Alberto Sordi, Nino Manfredi, Claudia Cardinale, Enrico Maria Salerno, express in a refined and masterful way this beautiful game of cinema.
