Generally by “La Ciociara” we refer to Vittorio De Sica's 1960 directorial masterpiece, but not everyone knows that in the late 1980s a remake was made in the form of a two-part TV miniseries that, besides the story of course, has two other elements in common with the original: the presence of Sophia Loren as the lead actress and Armando Trovajoli as the composer of the soundtrack (in the former case the original sessions have been lost forever). Despite having been composed in the 1980s, the soundtrack of this version of “La Ciociara” is not in the least affected by the prevailing sounds of the time and is in fact entirely made up - except for the brief divertissement of “Clock Curiosity” - of numerous orchestral and symphonic pieces, perfect for the historical period in which the story of “La Ciociara” is set, World War II.
What makes this work even more special is the presence of Sophia Loren herself on vocals in three compositions, two sung in English - “A Word of Love” and “Somewhere a Dream” - and one in Neapolitan dialect - the concluding “Ma Dio Addo' Sta”.
